Nearly four years after failing to recapture her former riding of Aurora—Oak Ridges—Richmond Hill, Ont. from the Liberals, former Conservative MP Leona Alleslev has launched a fresh bid to secure the right to run for the party she once briefly aspired to lead in Kingston and the Islands, Ont. “It’s time for a better voice for Kingston in Ottawa,” she announced via X over the weekend. “I’m excited to earn your vote to be the next Conservative candidate for Kingston and the Islands! Together we can bring it home.”
Originally elected under the Team Trudeau banner in 2015, Alleslev abandoned the Liberal caucus to join the Conservatives in 2018, citing irreconcilable differences over the then-majority Liberal government on economic and foreign policy issues, and went on to secure a second go-round in the House of Commons in 2019, but was ultimately defeated by Liberal challenger Leah Taylor Roy in 2021. She also made a brief attempt to land a spot on the Conservative leadership ballot in 2022 after failing to raise the $300,000 required to enter the race, which ended with a landslide victory for Pierre Poilievre.
